What does it mean to be Canadian? Well, there’s no easy answer, and countless people have debated it for years. To outsiders it can look like apologizing when someone else bumps into you, talking about the weather as if we might have some control over it, or putting maple syrup on more than just pancakes. Canada is a large, diverse country in so many ways, so it pretty hard to come up with a single definition of what Canadian is. Our personalities, backgrounds, experiences, languages, cultures, and perspectives are all over the map… literally.

One of the greatest strengths of Canadian identity is that it leaves plenty of room for different ways of being. We can share a country, a culture, or even some very Canadian experiences and still approach the world in completely different ways. These Canadians are a pretty good illustration of that.

Authentic Blue

Michael Bublé has built an incredibly successful career around performing, but there’s a warmth and genuine connection in the way he talks about family, relationships, and his fans. There’s plenty of polish to his image, but there’s an unmistakable sincerity and emotional warmth behind it.

Ian Hanomansing has a reputation for being thoughtful, empathetic, and approachable, with a calm style that makes people feel heard rather than talked at. His respectful, considerate, and genuine interest in people and their stories, makes people feel comfortable and happy to share.

Arlene Dickinson brings that same human element to the business world. Yes, she knows business. But mentorship, relationships, resilience, and believing in people have been a key part to the way she has built her career; a sharp difference from many of the other Dragons.

A singer, a journalist, and an entrepreneur may not have a lot in common on the surface, but all three show how an emphasis on people, relationships, and authenticity can shape very different, and successful lives.

Inquiring Green

George Stroumboulopoulos has made a career out of being curious. Whether its interviewing musicians, politicians, athletes, or scientist, or everyday people, he digs deeper and askes the questions no one else does, and challenges assumptions. He has a genuine interest in understanding people and ideas, and trying to makes sense of what’s going on.

Margaret Atwood takes that curiosity in a very different direction. What do a broadcaster, a novelist, and a musician all have in common? No, it’s not a setup for a bad joke – aside from being Canadian, they all have the same need to understand how things work—and maybe question why they work that way in the first place.

Organized Gold

Alex Trebek was the definition of preparation, consistency, and professionalism. He hosted Jeopardy! for nearly 37 years, bringing a famously steady, composed presence to the job. Behind that effortless appearance was an incredible amount of knowledge, precision, and commitment to maintaining high standards.

Hayley Wickenheiser earned her success because of her incredible work ethic, discipline, leadership, and commitment to her team. She didn’t just want to win; she put in the work, upheld the standard, and made sure others did too.

At first glance, Donovan Bailey’s confidence and swagger might make you think of another dimension entirely, but underneath it all is a disciplined, methodical athlete. Preparation, training, focus, and execution led him to becoming an Olympic champion and world-record holder.

Three very different people, with different careers, but there’s a common thread of standards, preparation, responsibility, and getting the job done well.

Resourceful Orange

Nathan Fillion has a playful, spontaneous energy and a knack for jumping between comedy, drama, action, and whatever opportunity comes next. There’s a playful, energetic quality to the way he approaches his work, along with a willingness to jump into the next adventure. Simu Liu has taken risks, adapted to unexpected opportunities, and made his own path rather than waiting for someone else to create it for him. His story involves risk-taking, entrepreneurship, persistence, and plenty of willingness to figure things out as he goes.

Erica Ehm has repeatedly reinvented herself throughout her career, moving across music, media, publishing, entrepreneurship, and advocacy. She has a natural talent for spotting an opportunity and turning it into something real without being afraid to try something new.

Their careers look very different, but there’s a shared willingness to jump in, adapt, experiment, and see what happens.

So, What Is the Canadian Personality? Canada isn’t one personality; it’s not even four personalities. It’s a country built from different cultures, languages, histories, experiences, and perspectives. It’s a place where people can have very different ideas about what it means to belong and still share something in common.

Canada is celebrated for its diversity. We talk about diversity of culture, language, background, heritage, experience, and perspective. But there is another kind of diversity that deserves some attention too: the diversity of how people think and interact with the world. Some of us want to understand how everything works. Some want to make sure everyone is okay. Some want to know that the job is done properly. Others would rather jump in and figure it out along the way.

Maybe that’s part of what makes Canada what it is. We don’t all have to approach things the same way to belong to the same community. We can be different, sometimes very different, and still find ways to work together.
