I recently had the chance to facilitate a training session for a management team, and it turned out to be one of the most exciting workshops I’ve ever delivered. The morning kicked off with a three-hour deep dive into Personality Dimensions®, where the team explored their unique temperaments and learned how these traits show up in the workplace. We talked about how understanding different personality types can improve communication and teamwork, and the group was fully engaged.
Then came the twist. In the afternoon, Chris—an amazing artist—joined us to teach a sketching session. It was such a fun change of pace! He guided everyone through basic sketching techniques, helping them tap into their creative sides. For some, it was a relaxing break from their usual day-to-day, while others discovered they had a hidden talent for art!
But the real magic happened afterwards. I divided the team into four groups based on their Personality Dimensions® profiles and gave them all the same picture to sketch. The results were incredible. Each group approached the task in a way that reflected their personality type:
- The Organized Golds focused on structure and accuracy, creating clean, precise drawings.
- The Inquiring Greens got a bit inventive, adding their own unique interpretations to the picture.
- The Resourceful Oranges went all out with bold strokes and an adventurous vibe.
- The Authentic Blues made their sketches feel deeply connected and meaningful, capturing the emotion of the image.
The feedback from the groups afterwards added another layer of insight (and fun!) to the day. Each team’s experience reflected their personality type in such a vivid way:
- The Organized Golds appreciated how smoothly their group worked together. One participant commented, “It was so nice—no drama, no fuss. Everyone just focused on the task and got it done.”
- The Resourceful Oranges jumped right in, divvying up the work without hesitation. “Each of us took a part and made it our own,” one Orange said, highlighting their natural ability to improvise and collaborate on the fly.
- The Inquiring Greens had everyone laughing with their take on the experience. “We were all arguing and no one was really listening, but we had a blast figuring it out!” Their creative (and chaotic) problem-solving shone through in their final drawing.
- The Authentic Blues were all about connection and enjoyment. “We just loved working together so much,” they shared, emphasizing the value they place on relationships and teamwork.
It was amazing to see how their personalities shone through in their artwork. This activity brought everything we talked about in the morning to life. The room was full of laughter, surprise, and a sense of connection as the groups shared their creations.
The feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with participants describing the session as both enlightening and enjoyable. The exercise illustrated the power of integrating personal growth with creative expression, leaving the team inspired and better equipped to work together.
By the end of the day, the team walked away with a deeper understanding of each other and a fresh perspective on how their strengths complement one another. The mix of learning, creativity, and teamwork made the session unforgettable—not just for them, but for me too.
